The Gaslamp Murders: Legacy is a gripping continuation of the first book, but it also takes the story in a direction I wasn't expecting. Years have passed, Britain is entering the First World War, and a new family is living at [****]. Unfortunately, the past hasn't finished with the house—or the people connected to it.
Dorothy Mane was probably the most fascinating character for me. As the daughter of Thomas and Edie, she is trying to understand where she came from, but there is something deeply disturbing beneath her polished exterior. The contrast between Dorothy and Helen, the young mother now living at number 47, makes the story especially compelling.
I also liked the way the First World War becomes part of the story rather than simply being a historical backdrop. William's experiences away from home and Helen's growing isolation at Cromwell Road create two very different kinds of danger. Meanwhile, the house is still there, quietly connecting the new story to everything that happened in the first book.
There are murders, ghosts, family secrets and some genuinely creepy moments, but underneath all of that is a story about the damage one generation can leave behind for the next.
A dark, atmospheric sequel that made [****] even more unsettling than it was in Book 1.
